Almost 1000 years of Brewing Expertise

We were founded by monks in 1074, so we can proudly claim that we’re one of the oldest Belgian beers. We may be nearly 1000 years old, but we’re going as strong as ever. Click on the arrows to discover our - very ancient - history.

Affligem abbey was founded by 6 knights, former brothers in arms, turned monks in the village of Affligem in 1074. The monks lived by the rules of St Benedict, which stress the importance of community. Water at the time wasn’t the best, so they thoughtfully, and very politely, started to brew beer for their guests (which was a safer alternative). Never say Belgians don’t prize hospitality!

Over the years

Over the years

There have been some tough times over the long years for the monks of Affligem. They overcame hardships both big-and-small and they never once lost their nerve or their passion for brewing.

The brewery was destroyed in World War II, and the monks faced yet another challenge. But Belgians never give up when beer is on the line. They found a solution and began collaborating with the brewery of Opwijk, located close to the abbey. Together they adapted the ancient recipe to fit modern techniques while keeping its quality and signature taste.

Their passion for beers

Beer still plays a big role in the lives of the Affligem monks. It’s a part of their daily routine, and binding social glue - every day the monks connect with each other, while each savors a single beer. They continue to welcome a diverse range of guests with Affligem beer, just like in the original abbey. They also serve an important function as quality keepers of the beer, making sure Affligem’s signature quality is maintained across all of our beers, just like in the abbey 1000 years ago.

“You never drink an Affligem alone, you share it to enhance the moment together.”

Words of wisdom from an Affligem monk.

The Abbey & The Monks

The abbey lives by the rules of St Benedict “Black Monks”, valuing hospitality. They welcome people from the world over to the abbey. A large part of the proceeds from the beer goes to various good causes, both at home and further afield - that support the well-being of all people. They open their doors to the local community either by offering orlending a friendly ear to those in need or by inviting their guest to a warm meal or warm place to sleep.
